Het verhaal
De burgemeestersmoord
Burgemeester Piet Smulders van Someren en burgemeester Willem Wijnen van Asten waren tijdens de oorlog actief in het verzet. Ze weigerden ook om namen door te geven van mensen die in Duitsland aan het werk gezet konden worden. Beiden werden ook een tijd te werk gesteld in de provincie Zeeland. De moord op twee landwachters door het verzet in Gemert is de aanleiding voor een wraakactie van de SS.
Op de avond van 14 augustus 1944 worden beide burgemeesters opgepakt door een Nederlands moordcommando, evenals Frans Eijsbouts. In een auto reden ze over de Kanaaldijk richting Weert. Plotseling stopte de chauffeur en riep hij “Panne”. Smulders, Wijnen en Eijsbouts moesten uitstappen en voor de auto gaan staan. Alle drie werden ze neer geschoten. Eijsbouts raakte gewond aan zijn arm, rolde van de berm af de sloot in en hield zich dood. Beide burgemeesters overleden ter plekke.
